Why "El Capitan"
Look east from almost any street in El Cajon and there it is: El Cajon Mountain, the big granite face locals call El Capitan, sitting over the valley. It doesn't move, it doesn't change, and it's there at two in the morning when you're locked out. That's the standard we set for the shop. "Lockworks" is the old trade word for the place where locks get made and fixed. We liked that it sounds like a workshop and not a call center, because that's what we are.
Licensed and insured
California licenses locksmith companies through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, part of the Department of Consumer Affairs. El Capitan Lockworks works under that state license and carries insurance, so there's a real company standing behind every job.

- Technicians: Every technician carries state locksmith registration and photo ID. Ask to see the card; every tech carries it.

If a locksmith can't tell you plainly that they're licensed and insured, that tells you what you need to know.
How we work
- ID before every opening. A house, an apartment, a car, a mailbox. We see ID and proof you belong there, or we don't open it. Landlords authorize openings for their tenants in writing or by phone.
- Quote before work. The number you hear on the phone is the number you pay. If the job changes when we see it, you hear the new number before we start.
- No upselling working hardware. A lock that works gets rekeyed, not replaced. We tell you when the door is the problem, and we tell you when it isn't.
- Marked van, real name. You'll see the name on the van, on the tech's ID, and on the invoice. Same name everywhere.
- Clean up after. Brass shavings, old pins and packaging leave with us.
